The Columbus Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) covers all areas
of law and is comprised of 325 lawyers with an average of over 14 years experience,
ranging from newly admitted practitioners to some with over 40 years experience.
We make referrals to general practitioners as well as lawyers who concentrate
their practice in only one area of law.
We do our best to make our referrals to an appropriate lawyer on the basis
of the client's needs, type of matter, complexity, budget, and location. The
Lawyer Referral Service is in compliance with The Supreme Court of Ohio Rules
Governing Lawyer Referrals Services which requires that all participating lawyers
maintain professional liability insurance and be in good standing with the Court.
All of our lawyers are required to use written fee agreements and should there
be a disagreement about fees, they have all agreed to participate in binding
arbitration.
Last year our LRS assisted over 50,000 people in matters covering all areas
of law, such as car accidents, divorce, workplace injuries, debt problems, buying
or selling a house, buying a business, intellectual property, collection, retirement
planning, criminal and traffic defense. We help people who do not know a lawyer
to find one. We also make referrals to appropriate government or social service
agencies. We even help people who need lawyers in other cities around the country.
Everyone wants quality legal work for a good price, but what constitutes quality
work or a good price will vary widely from client to client. When a lawyer quotes
a fee, it is usually based on the amount of time that the lawyer thinks the
particular transaction is likely to take. The lawyer should also give you an
estimate of the other costs (e.g. court fees) involved. Two lawyers looking
at exactly the same transaction might approach the task differently and, therefore,
would spend different amounts of time and money on the same case and maybe finish
with different results. For these reasons, we encourage clients, if time permits,
to talk to more than one attorney before they decide whom to hire.
Picking the right lawyer for you is the first step in getting a good result.
